If you are a Gen Z babe or guy, you’d probably not know about this story that happened in the 1990s. However, we will give you a brief recap of this story, which is better known as history.

Now, let’s get into the main part of the gist which is telling you about the rise and fall of one of the most dreaded armed robbers that terrorised the people of Onitsha many years ago.

Throwback: The rise and fall of Derico Nwamama

Okwudili Ndiwe popularly known as Derico Nwamama was a ruthless armed robber who was terrorizing the streets of Onitsha in the 1990s. The Aguleri indigene was reported to be living in Abuja and travels down to Onitsha whenever he has an operation.

He usually carries out his criminal activities inside banks and other big commercial establishments where he gets huge loot after a successful robbery operation.

The people of Onitsha always shiver whenever the name Derico Nwamama is mentioned because the guy was very deadly to the point that he and his gang killed over 200 people including 25 policemen.

Derico met his Waterloo when the then governor of Anambra state invited the Bakkasi boys- a vigilante group to Onitsha to help fight the insecurity in the land.

The Bakkasi boys were able to eliminate Derico because they came prepared. They (the Bakkasi boys) got information one faithful day that Derico Nwamama was coming to Onitsha to rob as usual. So, they laid an ambush on him, got him arrested, and beheaded him in front of thousands of Onitsha residents after parading him as a criminal.

Derico died on the 9th of June 2001 after being beheaded by the Bakkasi boys, and this brought a lot of joy in the faces of all the Onitsha residents then as they were all living in fear prior to the elimination of the monster, Derico Nwamama.
